Our History
1960s – The Beginning
The Brothers & Sisters Invitational began as a small gathering of Seventh-day Adventist Northeastern Conference workers who reserved Mondays to relax and play golf after busy Sabbath schedules and evening church meetings at Victory Lake Camp in Hyde Park, New York. These outings fostered fellowship, friendly competition, and lasting friendships.
1968 – The First Official Tournament
The first recorded tournament with trophies took place at LeJeune Golf Course in Miami. Bob Carter, one of the founders, won first place, setting the stage for an annual tradition.
1969 – The Northeastern Fall Classic
The first fall tournament at Dinsmore Golf Course was called the Northeastern Fall Classic. Early participants included Everett Alexander, Brooks, Robert H. Carter, George R. Earle, Gilbert Foster, John Guy, S.A. Hutchins, S.O. James, Harold Kibble, and Harvey Kibble Sr., later joined by Garnett Riddick and Colin Brathwaite.
Expanding Community
Word spread to other conferences and lay members, including Willie Moore and Ben Mitchell, who joined the tournament. Participation grew steadily, including friends from Bermuda such as John Carter, Howard Crockwell, and David King.
The Brothers Invitational
As the number of participants increased, the tournament was renamed the Brothers Invitational. Over the years, the event moved to warmer climates, including Pine Forge, Miami, Myrtle Beach, St. Augustine, and Bermuda. Legendary players and organizers strengthened the tournament’s competitive spirit and organizational foundation.
Leadership and Legacy
Commissioners over the years have included Robert H. Carter, Bennie Mann, Gerald Wells, Lynn Ross, Oster Paul, and Edward Pelote and current commissioner, Shane Simmons. Their dedication, along with the contributions of countless members, helped build the tournament into the vibrant, well-organized event it is today.
Looking Forward
Holding on to its roots, the tournament has grown to include women, inspiring the name change to the Brothers and Sisters Invitational. The event continues to expand, attracting players from near and far while celebrating the spirit of fellowship, friendly competition, and shared memories. Under the capable leadership of today’s officers, the Invitational honors its rich tradition while looking forward to many more years of connection, community, and fun.
